Money - پول

This is a minefield, but luckily the locals understand and will usually try to help.

The currency of Iran is the rial (IRR). However in everyday life Iranians prefer to use the term "toman" which means 10 rials. The value of the rial experiencing a steady decline, the prices are often expressed in thousands of Tomans, 1000 Toman being worth about one U.S. dollar. So the most convenient unit for more highly priced items is “hezar”, meaning “thousand”, often just described as “one”, (yek, or ye for short).

This is a one thousand Toman (10 000 Rials). You can get through quite a lot of these. Its blue, with Mt damarvand on the English side. Think of it as a dollar (2011).

For smaller purchases its good to have lots of these; 5000 Rial, or “Punsad”; currently about half a dollar. Its got nice pink flowers on it.

2000 Rial notes are useful for small purchases, it is described as "devist" ie 200 tomans.

You will end up with tons of useless notes, but if you offer them all to people they normally take exactly the correct amount, and calculate your change at the same time.
